Sam the snail and the big change: coping with transitions for sensitive children

Why are changes so challenging?

Changes, big or small, can feel exciting or even overwhelming for many children. This isn’t just true for kids with ASD, but also for highly sensitive children, those who need predictability, or kids who simply find transitions a bit more difficult. Think of a new classroom, moving house, a different teacher, or even a change in the daily routine at home.

Sam the snail as a guide through change

Sam the Snail symbolizes how challenging change can be. Sam loves his familiar path and his safe house. But sometimes, even Sam has to take a different route. Maybe a branch has fallen, or he needs to move to a new garden. Sam finds this hard, but he discovers that he’s allowed to go at his own pace.

What makes change difficult?

  • Unpredictability: Not knowing what’s coming creates unease.

  • Attachment to the familiar: The old feels safe, even if it wasn’t always pleasant.

  • Sensory input: New places, faces, or routines bring extra stimuli.

  • Fear of making mistakes: What if things don’t go well in the new situation?

Practical tips with sam

  • Preparation: Talk together about the change. Draw or tell the story of Sam discovering a new path.

  • Own pace: Emphasize that it’s okay to take time to adjust. Sam doesn’t stick his feelers out all at once either.

  • Bringing the safe house: Think together about what can help your child feel safe in the new place (a cuddly toy, a photo, or a little ritual).

  • Reflect together: After the change, take time to talk about what went well and what was hard. What would Sam do?

Parents speak

“The metaphor of Sam helps my son understand that it’s normal to find change challenging. The story gives him language and support, and now he knows: I don’t have to do it alone.”

“My daughter can finally explain why she loves her routines so much. Sam the Snail helped her talk about what she needs.”

“The transition to a new school went much more smoothly because we read Sam’s story together. She took her cuddly ‘house’ with her every day, and that gave her strength.”

Conclusion: change is part of growing

Sam teaches children (and parents) that change is part of life, but you can always bring your safe house and your own pace with you. This way, change becomes less something to fear and more an adventure you can grow through together.
