The calendar struggle with ADHD

Do you know that feeling? You’ve just realized you finally have some time for yourself today… and then your partner says, “Weren’t we going to cook together?” Or you spot a reminder on your phone for an appointment you completely forgot about. Welcome to the wonderful world of the calendar struggle!

The daily battle with time and appointments
For many people with ADHD, keeping track of appointments is a real challenge. You’ve got a paper planner full of scribbles, a digital calendar with notifications, and then random sticky notes all over the house. And still, appointments seem to magically disappear—or worse: you end up double-booked.
Relatable situations:
You think you canceled an appointment, but you only canceled it in your head.
Your partner loves structure, you love spontaneity,... and that clashes, especially when it comes to planning.
You created a system (color codes, stickers, apps)… but after a week, you’ve already forgotten about it.
Why is planning so hard with ADHD?
The ADHD brain is creative, fast, and loves new stimulation. But… it struggles with time awareness, prioritizing, and keeping an overview. You want to remember everything, but your head is already full.
Mini solutions from real life
Shared digital calendar
Use Google Calendar or TimeTree with your partner or family.
Put everything in it, even the small things.
Make it visual
Hang a weekly planner on the fridge or in the hallway.
Make appointments visible.
Set reminders
Turn on notifications on your phone, preferably more than once.
Check-in moment
Plan a “weekly reset” together every Sunday evening so everyone knows what’s coming up.
Kindness & humor
Remember: nobody is perfect. Laugh together about the chaos, make room for mistakes, and be gentle with yourself andothers. The calendar struggle is part of it... but together, you can make it a lot easier (and more fun).
