Primal panic: the hidden force behind fights and silence

Many couples get stuck in arguments or silence without knowing what’s really going on underneath. Often, there’s something much deeper at play: primal panic. This is the fear that makes you fight, flee, or freeze when you feel unsafe in your relationship.

Why does this happen?
Our brains are programmed to sound the alarm when we feel our safe base slipping away. That can be triggered by an angry look, a distant answer, or even by silence. Your body goes into stress mode: not because your partner is bad, but because connection is so important.
What helps?
Recognize the signals in yourself (“My heart rate goes up, I feel small or angry”)
Make it discussable (“I think I’m panicking now because I’m afraid you don’t see me anymore”)
Reassure each other (“We’re okay, even though it’s hard right now”)
