Primal panic in your relationship: what is it and why does it hurt so much?

Do you know that feeling when you’re suddenly overwhelmed by fear or despair if your partner pulls away, gets angry, or doesn’t understand you? That’s not just regular stress, what we call “primal panic” in EFT: a deep, instinctive fear of losing connection.

What is primal panic?
Primal panic is the shock that shoots through your body when you feel like your partner doesn’t see, hear, or need you anymore. It’s the fear that connects us all, deep down: the fear of being left alone. This feeling doesn’t come out of nowhere: it’s rooted in evolution. As humans, we’re wired to feel safe with others.
How do you recognize it?
You react more intensely than you understand yourself (“Why am I so angry/sad?”)
You suddenly feel desperate, powerless, or abandoned
You notice your partner suddenly seems unreachable
What can you do?
First: don’t judge yourself. Primal panic is human! Second: talk about it with your partner. Name what you’re feeling (“I get startled when you’re quiet; I’m scared of losing you”).
