How to deal with feelings of shame in your professional development

When shame enters the supervision room
When shame enters the supervision room

“I’m actually afraid to say this, but…” How often do I hear these words in supervision sessions? Shame might be the most underestimated obstacle in professional development.

What is shame, really?

Shame is different from guilt.

With guilt, you think: “I did something wrong.”

With shame, you think: “I am wrong.”

It’s not about your actions, but about who you are as a person. That’s what makes shame so painful and paralyzing.

Shame in helping professions

As a therapist, you might experience shame when:

  • You make a ‘mistake’ in a session

  • You feel incompetent compared to a colleague

  • You don’t know how to respond to a client

  • You notice your own issues surfacing during your work

  • You doubt your professional abilities

The paradox of shame

The more shame you feel, the less likely you are to talk about it. And the less you talk about it, the bigger the shame becomes. It’s a vicious cycle that can block your professional growth.

Shame as a compass

In supervision, I teach professionals to see shame as a compass. Where do you feel shame? Those are often exactly the areas where you can learn and grow the most. Shame points you towards your growth opportunities.

Practical steps:

  • Recognize shame: Learn to notice the physical signals (warmth, tension, looking away)

  • Normalize it: Shame is part of learning and growing

  • Share it gently: Start small, with a trusted supervisor

  • Explore the message: What is the shame trying to tell you?

  • Transform it into curiosity: Shift from “I am bad” to “What can I learn from this?”

The power of vulnerability

As Brené Brown says: vulnerability is the birthplace of courage, creativity, and change. In supervision, we create a safe space where shame can be shared and transformed.

Shame loses its power when it is shared within a safe, empathetic relationship.
